Information about Untertürkheim

Wappen Untertürkheim

Untertürkheim, first mentioned in 1200, lived off wine growing and the rafting of timber at the Neckar for centuries. It is assumed that the beginnings of “Türkheim” date back to an Alemanni clan in the 4th century. The chief of this clan gave his name to the site “Duringoheim” which later became “Türkheim”. Progress came in the 19th century after the first rail track between Untertürkheim and Cannstatt was opened in 1845. In 1903 Gottlieb Daimler erected an automobile factory at the Neckar banks in Untertürkheim following a fire in his workshop in Cannstatt. This contributed largely to the subsequent development of Untertürkheim into a leading industry location in Baden-Württemberg.

In order to create housing, workers of Daimler Benz founded the district Luginsland at the beginning of the 20th century. In time, further idyllic residential areas were built which successfully prevented Untertürkheim becoming a purely industrial area. Unlike timber rafting, wine growing still exists, where it has been pursued since the 8th century. In the Middle Ages, many monasteries had vineyards in Untertürkheim. Until today Untertürkheim has stayed a wine growing town. The two very successful wine growing associations in Rotenberg and Untertürkheim are dedicated to environmentally friendly wine growing. The vineyards Altenberg, Mönchberg and Schloßberg are known well beyond the borders. Many gastronomy businesses, vineyards and the two wine growing associations invite people for a visit to sample this culture. The special quality of the wines produced is well known by connoisseurs and wine lovers.

A favourite destination is the district of Rotenberg. Here once stood the family seat of the Dukes of Württemberg. The grave chapel which can still be visited today was built by King Wilhelm I in 1820 for his deceased wife Katharina. Later his daughter Maria and the king himself were buried here.
