Schiller city Stuttgart
Stuttgart sees itself since always as Schiller city even though the estimated poet (1759-1805) once ran away from here. Duke Carl Eugen had imposed a writing ban and because of unauthorised removal from the troop – two performances of the “Räuber” in Mannheim – the poet was sentenced to 14 days arrest. Schiller lived in Stuttgart for a full 10 years, was previously in Marbach, Lorch and Ludwigsburg, and after that another 22 years mostly away from Württemberg. It is said that the classic had read parts of the “Räuber” to his friends in the forest area of the Bopser. Stuttgart organised the first Schiller festival (1825), they had the first Schiller club (1827) and on the Schillerplatz is the largest memorial for the poet.
