„A gscheidr Wein hôdd nô koim Domma gschaded“. (A good wine has never hurt anyone)
Wine has made Stuttgart rich; already since 1108 the vines thrive and prosper on the slopes. With 403 ha winegrowing area, Stuttgart is the fifth largest winegrowing location in Germany. And of course there are some specialties in the Swabian land. A few examples:
The Swabian „Besa“ (Besen = broom) – what is it? Proof by the Swabians that there is space for four bottoms on a two-seater bench. It’s cramped and never quiet. Laughing, singing and story-telling, a "Lombadliedle" (song) with a glass of wine in hand and nice company – even if you come alone, everybody quickly finds themselves part of a larger group. A „Besa“ (marked by the broom outside the door) is a sort of temporary pub and doesn’t need a special concession. Therefore they may only be open for a maximum of four years. But what a fantastic time when Swabians and foreigners sit together in the ex-living room, enjoying the fresh wine and small Swabian meals.
Over one million visitors – friends of wine and fond of company – visit the wine village event in Stuttgart every year. In around 120 cosy vine-covered huts on the market square and on the Schillerplatz as well as the Kiurchstraße, around 350 different wines from Württemberg are served each year at the end of August until the beginning of September for 10 days. Swabian specialities and other culinary delicacies also go fast on the „Stuttgarter Weindorf“.
Interesting and well worth knowing facts on the subject of wine growing can be found in the wine growing museum in Uhlbach. The exhibition offers an overview of the wine growing culture from Roman times until today.
