Information about Degerloch

Wappen Degerloch

The people of Degerloch have in earlier days been said to be headstrong. The location was suburbanised after Stuttgart in 1908 but its independence has been kept “up on the mountain” to this day. Degerloch was first mentioned around 1100 when a knight gave the site to the monastery of Hirsau. Up until the 19th century the quiet suburb pursued mainly agriculture, fruit and wine growing, and a speciality which was, for a long time, the profession of sock and silk weaver. But Degerloch  was to change quickly. In order to shorten the distance to Stuttgart, a new vineyard track was built at the beginning of the 19th century, the cog wheel train operates additionaly since 1884. These advantageous traffic connections made Degerloch a sought after domicile. When the first summer residences were built on the borders of Degerloch in 1880 and the city district established itself as a mountain air spa, the south slope quickly became a villas area. The one sight of Degerloch known far beyond Stuttgart is the TV Tower of Stuttgart. Built by Fritz Leonhardt and Erwin Heinle, the colossus which is 217 meters high and 4,500 tons heavy is considered to be example for all TV towers in the world. At 150 meters height there are the broadcasting studios of the local radio station, Südwestdeutschen Rundfunk (SWR), a restaurant and two observation decks. They provide a fantastic panoramic view over Stuttgart. Another site worth seeing is the Waldfriedhof cemetery which was built shortly before the start of the First World War. Here are buried amongst others celebrities such as Theodor Heuss, Arnulf Klett and Paul Bonatz. Private links about Degerloch and Hoffeld.
