Information about Birkach

Wappen Birkach

Birkach belongs to the smallest districts of Stuttgart. It was suburbanised on 1st April 1942 and is administrated by the personel union with Plieningen since 1946. Nothing disturbs the idyllic, quiet location in this comfortable Filder suburb even though the city isn’t far away.  Birkach looks back at a long history. The first documentary evidence of the city dates back to the year 1140. 150 years later Birkach was sold to the monastery Bebenhausen. In the 18th century, a priest of Birkach founded the first trade school of Württemberg, where children were taught the use of the spinning wheel. As a result of this school there were many weavers in Birkach in the 19th century but industrialisation could hardly gain ground in this small village.
The Protestant village church was built by the Catholic Duke Carl Eugen in 1779  for his wife Franziska von Hohenheim. During this time Birkach was a street village with the “Alte Dorfstraße" as centre. In the 20th century the village doubled its inhabitants quickly and grew with numerous new buildings. The district of Birkach is considered to be especially family-friendly. Besides many children’s playgrounds, there is also a youth centre. During the expansion of Birkach, the district of Schönberg was created. The domicile Kleinhohenheim was once a royal stud for cattle-breeding. Today this area is on lease to the University of Hohenheim who cultivates it. Private link about Birkach
